TASMANIAN SURVEYING AND GEOSPATIAL COMMUNITY

Tasmania’s surveying and geospatial sector punches well above its weight. Across government, private practice, research institutions, and industry, our professionals underpin hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity, shaping how our island is mapped, managed, developed, and understood. From precision agriculture and forestry management to coastal monitoring, polar science, and major infrastructure delivery, our community brings world-class spatial capability to some of Australia’s most complex and distinctive landscapes.

What makes Tasmania unique isn’t just the breadth and quality of the work, it is the strength of the relationships behind it. This site is a home for that community; a place to explore presentations, papers, and resources from past events, and to stay connected to a sector that continues to innovate, collaborate, and make its mark well beyond our shores.

Island to Insight: AI, Analytics and the Digital Landscape

Our Conference Theme

In 2026, we meet at a pivotal moment. Geospatial science & technology is firmly converging with the IT landscape. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced analytics, and cloud-scale data platforms are reshaping what is possible with location-based data. The question is no longer whether GIS and AI intersect, but how we navigate that intersection with skill, curiosity, and purpose.

This year’s theme captures both where we are and where we’re headed. We recognise that Tasmania is geographically distinct, rich in natural complexity, and home to a proud tradition of spatial science. We look outward to a digital landscape being transformed by artificial intelligence and advanced analytics.

Island to Insight is a journey. It speaks to the work of turning raw location data into understanding, and understanding into action. It acknowledges that Tasmania is not a bystander to the global shifts reshaping geospatial practice, but rather an active, capable participant.
State of GIS 2026 explores this journey across its full spectrum. from the foundational principles that underpin good spatial analysis, to the ethical dimensions of AI-driven decision-making, to cutting-edge applications already transforming how we understand our world.

Whether you’re deep in the technology, building the business case, asking the hard questions, or just beginning your journey into spatial intelligence and AI, this conference is for you.
